Born in New York City on October 22, 1929, Stanley Cooperman became a Canadian citizen in 1972. He received his B.A. from New York University and his Ph.D. from the University of Indiana, where he also taught. Prior to coming to teach English at Simon Fraser University from 1969 to 1976, he also taught at Tehran University, the University of Oregon and Hofstra University. Also a journalist as a young man, he began seriously writing poetry later in his career. With his wife, Jennifer, he had two children, Galila-Yael and Amichai, and lived in North Vancouver. After he committed suicide in 1976, his wife donated his extensive collection of private papers to UBC in 1983.
