Born on May 7, 1961 in Kitchener, Ontario, Barbara A. Mitchell moved to B.C. in 1991. She received her education at the University of Waterloo (H.B.A., M.A.) and McMaster University (Ph.D.). An Associate Professor of Sociology and Gerontology at Simon Fraser University, her main areas of study include youth transitions to adulthood, families and aging and generational relations.
