Eighty-one comprehensive species accounts are provided for biologists, naturalists and conservationists in J.D. McPhail's The Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia (University of Alberta Press, June, 2007), illustrated by D.L. McPhail with a foreword by Joseph S. Nelson. The eighty-one species accounts provide both the scientific and common names of each fish, distinguishing characteristics and origins, taxonomic comments, geographic distribution, a life-history and habitat-use summary, and conservation comments. Each entry is accompanied by an illustration and key to aid accurate identification. J.D. McPhail published this work as professor emeritus of the Native Fish Research Group in the Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia.
