B.C.-born historians George Fosty and Darril Fosty have produced the first book-length study of Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes, formed in 1895 in Halifax, twenty-two years prior to the creation of the NHL. Comprised of the sons and grandsons of runaway American slaves, teams such as the Africville Sea-Sides and New Glasgow Speed Boys pioneered organized Canadian hockey from 1895 to 1925.
