James McNamee of Victoria published a novel about goldpanning and frontier relationships with First Nations characters, Florencia Bay (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1960. Cloth, 205 pages, book size 5 1/4" x 8"). From 1927 to 1957 Maclean-Hunter offered awards for short story writing (1927-1955) and novels (1953-1957). Florencia Bay received the last Maclean-Hunter prize for a novel in 1957. There is a review of this novel in the Summer, 1960 issue of Canadian Literature, written by David Bromige.
